For six weeks in the summer, MercyMed hosts an internship program for college juniors and seniors. Every May we select a small group of students to peek behind the curtain and see how our clinic uses medicine to magnify Jesus and love our neighbors. We strive to help the interns learn more about Jesus, poverty, and medicine in a variety of ways:
- Shadow different departments within the clinic
- Volunteer in the community with friends in the ministry
- Read and discuss a book on poverty alleviation
- Share meals with influential leaders in town
These experiences help to break down preconceived thoughts on what poverty is and how to help those who are living in it.
What to Expect
This internship is a lot of hard work. Whether you are harvesting vegetables on our Urban Farm or on your feet all day following a physician, there is a lot expected of you. It is also a lot of fun. Between meeting new people, learning about things you haven’t considered before, or having a big staff party at the end of your time with us, this is an amazing opportunity to strengthen your faith, grow your worldview, and do it all with a lot of laughs and new friends.
A few more things to note:
- The internship is unpaid
- Housing is not provided
- This opportunity is like working a full time job, with an over 40 hour weekly commitment
- The day starts at 8 AM with a daily devotion
- While you may have a specific field you are interested in, you will also shadow departments that are not directly connected to that field, like the farm
